Brookfield Central LW Wins 2005 State TOC!

December 11, 2005 – 1:36 am by: Bill Batterman

In the final round of the 2005 Wisconsin Debate Coaches Association State Tournament of Champions, Brookfield Central LW (Andy Lei & Carly Wunderlich) defeated Marquette BJ (Gaurav Bhatnagar & Tyler Jackson) on a 3-2 decision. Brookfield Central affirmed and went for dispositional PICs bad in the 2ar; Paul Hager, May Wang, and Nick Bubb voted affirmative and Matt Olson and Tim Ernst voted negative.

Congratulations to Brookfield Central! A plethora of (outstanding) photos will be posted soon. Full results from LD, Public Forum, and VSS can be found below.

  2. wow. great minds think alike… I was just finishing writing my version of this same post.

I need to say thanks to a couple of people for helping out the WFD coverage. To all of those people willing to take pictures for me: Megan Degeneffe, Max Balhorn, and Bill Batterman. To others sending me pictures they’ve taken: Mr. Jacobi and Nicole Liakapolous.

A big thanks to Bill too… WFD’s coverage wouldn’t have been possible had he not been posting round by round. My computer crashed and I was limited by judging commitments. Thank you Bill.

P.S. The pictures are really sweet, but I need a while to upload them.

  3. In the meanwhile, you can complete results on the WDCA Web site.

  4. Continuing praise from the Sheb North debate team…

Jesse, Mr. Noonan, Mr. Traas, and all other WDCA folk did a fantastic job running the tournament. It was definately appreciated by those of us who like to do things like… sleep.

Congrats to Carly and Andy, extending the brookfield dominance at the state tournament to a third year. Much love from the Sheb North kids… meaning… me and Jon

  5. actually Noah, its 4 years, because Zach and Akansha won to begin, and then Zach and Amit won two years in a row after that.

  6. Check out the WDCA history thread for more on Brookfield Central’s incredible hegemony at the STOC. On an individual level, I am quite confident that Zack Brown will be remembered as the most successful debater in Wisconsin TOC history and Ankur Shah is not far behind. Andy and Carly are just the latest in a long line of uber-talented debaters from Brookfield Central and it was great to see the hard work of Kevin Lennon (emeritus) and Alison Eggert rewarded with another championship. Mad props for a fantastic tournament… if we had to lose, Carly and Andy were one of the teams I was cheering for the most.

Continuing the Lancer Love, my condolences as well as my congratulations on an awesome WI debate career to Alex Twinem and Ann Yuan. You were one of the first teams I’ve seen develop from rookies to elite-level seniors and it was always a pleasure to work with you. The development of both Alex and Ann as debaters and people has been wonderful to watch and you should be very proud of your accomplishments in WI debate.

There are a lot of other seniors that deserve shout-outs and I will definitely do that at some point after NFL/CFL/WHSFA. In the meantime, congratulations to everyone who qualified for and competed at the State TOC… debate is really hard and every single student should be proud of their participation.

    WI Love,
    ~Bill

  7. As nice as it was of Bill to give me a mention, the extent of my “hard work” this year was showing up (late, both days) to the tournament and nothing else. The show was all Alison’s and she should get all of the credit. I believe this makes her the first person in the history of the WDCA tournament to have won it both as a debater and a coach.

Having established my distance from the team this year, I can say I’m thrilled for Andy and Carly, who are awesome. Alex and Ann are awesome as well (although Ann is decidedly awesome-er when she’s able to speak without sounding like a dying seal.)

At any rate, it was great to see everyone again, and to see how some of the kids I judged a lot last year have progressed. Good luck to everyone for the rest of the season.

  8. It’s also worth noting that there was a V-4 Divison. Cedarburg was victorious there. It would be nice if wiforensics.com devoted some column inches and bandwith to the results of the rest of the STOC as well.

  9. Mr. Knetzger:

I’m working on it…. but I have finals on which to work (I’ve been on the grammar patrol ever since Noah insulted my English ;p ). Four person results will be transcribed from the packet tomorrow (I hope).

If people were willing to volunteer their time covering V4, I’d be amenable to giving them article posting priviledges. Thus, far, no one has volunteered. I should also point out that all of the VSS and LD results were collected on a volunteer basis. Mr. Batterman and others have been quite generous in helping me out with coverage, but thus far, no one from the V4 community has. WFD operates on an open-submission process that’s guided by me. I’ve put out a signficant call for writers on Cross-x well over two months ago and no one stepped forward. Hell, the one V4 article we’ve had I had to specifically ask for. I promised Peg Erbs (spelling?) that this website wouldn’t be divisive, and I don’t think that it is. We have a small group of people who help with coverage, and we cannot be everywhere. People have to help, if this site is going to cover everything completely.

Wisconsin Forensics Daily is definately not against any form of debate in Wisconsin. To be frank; I’d love to promote all forms of debate-but it’s quite hard when you have judging and coaching obligations as well.

  10. Regarding my mention of Kevin, it didn’t come out quite as I had intended. Alison is awesome and she knows that I appreciate all the hard work she’s put in this season and last, but I did want to mention Kevin when noting the incredible success that Brookfield Central has had at the STOC:

    - 7 STOC Champions
    - 4 STOC Runners-Up
    - 3 STOC Top Speakers (at least)

Kevin wasn’t responsible for all of those, but he was responsible for much of the program’s recent run (beginning with Alison and Ankur) and I’m sure Carly and Andy give him a ton of credit for helping develop them into top-notch debaters.

Mad props to Alison though, obviously. I hadn’t even thought of the win as a debater/win as a coach thing… that’s incredibly impressive!

    Lancer love,
    ~Bill

  11. Mr. Bubb,
I apologize if my earlier post sounded terse or angry. I really just wanted to share the great news from the other divisions. I’m sure it’s hard to get people to write columns, that’s one reason I said yes when you asked.

I’m glad to have everything posted. Debate in Wisconsin will have a long and bright future so long as we all keep working to help our studuents.

To all the Champions, Congrats!!! You will always be able to call yourself a state champ. To Nick, Bill and everybody else here, continued thanks for helping the community. It’s got to be tough to do that while judging and coaching.
