Thursday Thing to Read: A Reminder

October 26, 2006 – 5:45 pm by: Nick Bubb

WDCA Awards Nominations are due to Past-President Jessie Hager by November 15. This means that students interested in the WDCA Scholarship awards or coaches interested in nominating their colleagues should submit the required forms to Jessie by the date mentioned above.

And since we’ve been talking about WDCA History. Let’s take a look at the coaches and students that have won each of the respective awards since they have been established. What’s listed below is correct. The only thing we are missing are scholarships.

Next week, we return with our regularly scheduled Thursday Thing to Read with a piece by James Madison Memorial coach, Tim Scheffler, on why procedural arguments are good for debate. Tim has a unique perspective on this issue, because he is an attorney.

  2. Eva Lam got one of the scholarships last year…Sibolan O’Connel (sp?) got the other one, I believe.

  3. Thanks, Amjad. WFD needs more Asad presence.

I am not certain that the 2k4 Coach of the Year award is Nathan Hanson. Can anyone confirm or deny?

By Nick Bubb on Oct 26, 2006

  4. The 2004 Schlorship that’s missing is Mike Briedenbach of Cedarubrg.

Also The 2004 Hall of Fame award also went to Mary Knutson of Cedarburg

By John Knetzger on Oct 26, 2006

  5. Virtually positive that Nathan was Coach of the Year in 2004.

By Jon on Oct 27, 2006

  6. Mary Knutson didn’t recieve the 2004 Hall of Fame award. I am 100% confident that either Jerri Kimmel recieved it or the WDCA meeting notes are wrong.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 27, 2006

  7. The year may be wrong, but I was at the meeting where she received the award. Peg Erbes accepted in on her behalf. She is a member of the Hall. The meeting was held at Nicolet that year. I’m totally confident of that fact.

  8. I think Maria Putzer won the scholarship with Christine in 2004. But don’t quote me on it.

By David Gates on Oct 27, 2006

  9. John - you are right about that. But that was 2k3. Gargo is incorrectly listed. Gargo was fo’ sho’ coach of the year that year, but not hall.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 28, 2006

  10. Duane Bosin (hall of fame, 1989) hailed from Appleton West, I am almost certain (our tournament is named after him when we have it, and I remember Gargo talking about him). Also, I am just about positive that David is correct about Maria winning a scholarship in 2004.

  11. I think the 2005 Coach of the Year is the WDCA President Adam Jacobi. Obviously, he’ll know if I got it right.

By John Knetzger on Oct 29, 2006

  12. Wow, John… no — I didn’t receive that award!

Wasn’t Maria Putzer (Appleton West) one of the 2004 recipients? I have a photo of her on stage with Nathan Hanson. I will also check my old meeting minutes tonight to see if I can make heads or tails of the recipients that year.

I went back and checked a few of my own notes and filled in some gaps on the WDCA Web site. You’ll notice that the 1994 and 1995 Hall of Fame winners have been updated. I also did coach searches on NFLOnline’s Points database to fill in others. We’re still looking for a few of the coach award affiliations. (It’s interesting to note that no coach affiliations were included in the original files I posted on the Web site, so I’m glad we’re doing this, before it leaves the collective memory of the debate community).

  13. Adam - we need a correct response here. the 2005 spring meeting notes say 2k4 went to kimmel and the 2k5 notes say Noonan. I think Knutson was 2k3 - but I’ve lost my copy of those notes.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 30, 2006

  14. The new updates were based on an official handbook document I received from Nathan Hanson. I think you have the Hall of Fame and Coach of the Year awards confused, Nick. As of right now, all of our coach awards are up to date (though we’re missing a few school affiliations, as noted). Confirmation of the 2004 scholarship winners are what’s needed.

By Adam Jacobi on Oct 30, 2006

  15. Either I’m wrong or our meeting minutes are wrong. I’m more inclined to believe the website/documents from Nathan are wrong, simply because the Hall of Fame award is presented at the Spring Meeting. I’m sending emails to Gargo and Noonan to check though.

Seriously, 2005 is Tom Noonan. I was at that meeting. I’ll paste the text from the 2006 Spring meeting minutes.

“The Hall of Fame Award was presented to Tom Noonan of Marquette University High School.”

The claim that I’m confused doesn’t even make anysense. Tom won the coach of the year award in 1998 for Nicolet, this sentence clearly reads Marquette.

And 2004 is Kimmel. Again from the 2005 Spring Meeting Minutes:
“Hall of Fame was awarded to Jerri Kimmel of Beaver Dam.”

Nathan probably has 2003 screwed up because Gargo is listed for both.

Actually, I just found this Cross-x Thread that indicates that Gargo was Coach of the Year in 2002.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 30, 2006

  16. Fine. I’ll make the changes. No need to get fiesty about it!

By Adam Jacobi on Oct 30, 2006

  17. OK, so here’s my question: Does the ‘year’ refer to the date on the calendar whent he award was handed out? Mary Knutson got the Hall in 2004, after the 2003 season. Which year is it?

Same goes for the schlorship. Mike Breidenbach of Cedarburg got a schlorship in December of 2003 at the STOC in Wausau. I was sitting right next to him when his name was called. Is that 2003 or 2004?

Anyway, I’m glad that people seem to care about the past. Wisconsin has an interesting one, to say the least. A bit of a reminder of those who paved they way is important.

By John Knetzger on Oct 30, 2006

  18. John, that’s a good question. It’s one I’ve been struggling with too. That may be what is making our results all messed up. My impression was that the year corresponds to the fall year, not the academic one. So, we haven’t given out the 2006 awards because we haven’t had the 2006 voting yet. And that seems to make sense with how our state tournament awards are distributed.

Adam, I don’t mean to be snippy. But I think that we should make sure that our results are correct so that we can honor the coaches that have won these awards. Being inaccurate seems to discret the honor we’ve given them.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 30, 2006

  19. It might be helpful to change the dates to academic years (e.g. 2005-2006, 2004-2005, etc.) instead of calendar years (e.g. 2006, 2005, etc.).

  20. Good suggestion: as you can see, this clarified all of the problems we have been having. This also shows that we have been missing more scholarships than we thought.

By Nick Bubb on Oct 30, 2006

  21. was the 03-04 Kevin Lennon. I seem to recall him being one of three judges on the ballot.
