  4. I’m thankful for my family, particularly my dad, who has been a beacon of solid values and humane leadership. I am grateful, too, for my friends and colleagues, who bring me joy, laughter and comfort when I need it most. I am thankful for finding the calling of education through speech and debate. Teaching is a noble and often “thankless” job, yet being there when students make breakthroughs and when they demonstrate a high degree of proficiency and creativity can equal no “high.” I am grateful to my students for often opening my mind to new perspectives and possibilities; as I teach, I learn daily from my own students. I am thankful for this activity of forensics for nurturing tomorrow’s leaders and for the motivation it fosters through competition. I am thankful for relatively good health and a stable life and for living in a democratic society, that while it may oscillate from right to left and back again, it offers the liberty of expression that eventually ensures freedom for all.

  6. 1. Salvation.

    2. My family, especially my wife, who has long put up with me and my nonsense.

    3. Living in the U.S., with all her faults the most prosperous and free (and generous) nation ever.

    4. Forgiveness and blessings.

    5. My students in forensics. Forensics is really about them, after all.

  7. I’m thankful for my health and that of family and friends. I’m grateful for people who continue to dedicate countless hours and long weekends away from those family and friends to be there for the students who compete. I’m thankful for the blessings God has blessed our land with the freedom to say what we want and worship how we choose. We are a beacon of light from a city on a hill.
