WDCA Releases Novice Topics
August 9, 2007 – 6:37 pm by: Nick BubbFresh from the WDCA-WHSFA Summer Board meeting, the WDCA has released the tentative set of novice topics. These topics are tentative because they are pending the approval of the full membership at the fall meeting on Sept. 15.
(Which if you were interested is being held at Brookfield East. More information on that to come.) Without further ado, here are the novice topics.
Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its public health assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa:
- By rescinding the Mexico City Policy and increasing financial and/or technical assistance to organizations that provide comprehensive family planning. [Global Gag Rule]
- By increasing assistance for drinking water and sanitation infrastructure to meet the Millennium Development Goals. [Water Infrastructure]
- By establishing a comprehensive disease surveillance program. [Disease Surveillance]
- By creating a Global Health Service to expand the capacity of community health workers in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Focus Countries. [Global Health Services]

Out of curiosity, what is the likelihood that these will change at the fall meeting?

changes are usually very slim, because debates begin on the novice topics the following week. However, that’s not to say that they cannot happen. Last year the wording was altered on service learning, but the topic area stayed the same.
