The Appleton East Alexandra Hoecherl Challenge

October 31, 2007 – 6:28 am by: Mike Traas

Dear Debate Coach,

The Administration and Debate Coaching Staff at Appleton East High School are pleased to invite you and your Debate team to the Appleton East “Alexandra Hoechrel Challenge” and “Patriot Debate Tournament” on November 30th thru December 1st, 2007. We are very excited about the Challenge format and henceforth will be offering 4 divisions in the challenge format, and additionally we are very proud to continue to officially call the challenge divisions of the Appleton East Debate Tournament the “Alexandra Hoecherl Challenge”. We will also continue to call the VSS speaker awards the Reddy awards.

We will also keep the challenge happening in the commons with the big boards and placards. (We will be asking schools to call prior to arriving at East with exact names of Students and Judges.) Don’t be frightened, we all know how to use a phone and remember names, and that’s all you need to know. The challenge format slows the process of the tournament down just a bit, but we have always had the fortune to stay relatively close to our printed schedule.

DATE Friday & Saturday, November 30 & December 1, 2007
ENTRIES Teams may be entered in two switch side divisions, Lincoln Douglas division and Public Forum (all four will be run as a challenge format). Additionally, we will host a Novice Four Speaker division on both days.

Challenge divisions will compete on Friday night and Saturday for 6 prelim rounds and then elimination rounds. Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum will also compete on both Friday and Saturday. The Novice 4 person division will run on both Friday night and Saturday, having separate tournaments on both days, and doubling the possibility of TOC qualifiers.

FEES Entry fees are $30.00 per switch side Challenge teams, $30.00 per 4-person team, and $15.00 per LD debater. Public Forum fees are $20.00 per team. Unless you cancel or drop 48 hours prior to the tournament, you will be responsible to pay the fees of the entries you registered.

JUDGES Each school must bring one judge per Four-Speaker team, one judge per 2 Switch Side teams and PF teams, or fraction thereof. For Lincoln / Douglas you will need 1 judge per 2 entries.

L/D L/D will use the November/December NFL Resolution: Resolved: In the United States, plea bargaining in exchange for testimony is unjust.
PF Public Forum will use the December NFL Resolution: (an only the December resolution for both days even thought the tournament starts on the last day of November, but it is just silly to think about having different resolutions for a single tournament.) At the time I am preparing this, the December resolution has not yet been released, please check back if you can not find the resolution after November 1st.

AWARDS Awards will be presented to at least the top three teams in each 4 person division. Awards for the Challenge events will begin at break rounds. Top speaker awards will be presented in each Policy division.

FOOD A concession stand operated by the AE-Arts parents and alumni Assoc. will be available at the High School during competition. We ask that contestants plan to eat at the High School so as not to delay the tournament.
