This weekend, Wisconsin’s varsity and novice policy debate teams left a lasting impression on competitors from across the Midwest.

In the varsity policy division, Sheboygan North’s Tim Knoedler and Laurel Mills enjoyed a 4-2 preliminary record. In elimination rounds, KM defeated teams from Olathe North (KS), Walter Payton (IL), and St. Ignatius (OH) before losing to New Trier (IL) in the final round. In winning their quarter-finals debate, Sheboygan North received a bid to the National Tournament of Champions.

Marquette’s Joe Balistreri and Garrett Fields and Appleton (Kimberton?) East’s Caitlin Peterson and Jessica Stuyvenberg also obtained 4-2 prelim records. Appleton East PS lost their doubles debate to the Kincaid School (TX) and Marquette exited the tournament after losing an octafinal debate to St. Ignatius. Sheboygan North’s Tim Knoedler was the Tournament’s 17th speaker, Marquette’s Joe Balistreri was 4th, and Garrett Fields was 1st.

Wisconsin also made its presence felt in the Novice division. Marquette’s Michael Hoffman and Jack Mackay were the tournament’s 2nd seed with an impressive 6-0 preliminary record. The Hilltoppers defeated Homewood Flossmoor’s Emily Carroll and Laura River in the finals en route to victory. Marquette’s Jack Mackay was 22nd speaker, Sheboygan North’s Brandon Pakkebier took home 11th place honors, and Marquette’s Michael Hoffman was 4th.

Congratulations on a tournament-well-done to all Wisconsin teams in attendance—Marquette, Nicolet, Appleton East, and Sheboygan North—and their respective debaters.
