South Milwaukee does have a wireless connection, so you should not need these resources. But in case you like killing trees or you don’t have a laptop/wifi card, we figured you’d be interested in these resources.

Enjoy.

WSDT Important Information

Posted on December 10, 2009 – 9:08 pm by: Nick Bubb

Dear Coaches,

The Wisconsin State Debate Tournament is upon us, and there are few things we need to tell you before we see you in South Milwaukee this weekend.

First, judge preferencing in the Joy of Tournaments system is now active for the divisions that use it (V4, VSS, LD). Please log into your account and rate the judges according to your desires. We will be turning off the judge preferencing system at 8:00 p.m Friday night. This means that you need to have your ratings completed in the system by 8:00 pm Friday night. If you are having problems with the technology, please let us know and we can accommodate that. If you fail to have your judge rating in by 8:00 p.m., you will be allowed to rate judges Saturday morning – however, you not be allow preferred critics for rounds 1 and 2. So please complete the information on time. 95% of the judge paradigms have been posted to the WSDT wiki site (http://wsdtparadigms.wikispaces.com). One judge in each divisions is missing information and we expect it to be completed tonight.

Tomorrow afternoon we will be emailing all coaches a judge preference booklet for your use at the tournament. South Milwaukee has an open wireless connection that you should be able to access the wiki at the tournament. We will also make an offline copy of the wiki available and have all of the paradigms posted in case you forget.

Second, schools are reminded that they must call in to verify their entries tomorrow evening. The call-in time is between 4:30-7:30 p.m. The phone number to call is 608-628-3114. If Tim Scheffler does not pick up, do not leave a voicemail. Wait a few minutes and then call again. The penalty for failing to call is a $50 fine. Please do not forget, as this is essential for our running the tournament on time Saturday morning.

Third, for schools who wish to register early (Friday evening) – our early registration will be at the La Quinta Inn on 7141 South 13th Street, Oak Creek. Early Registration will run from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m Friday. Schools are reminded that no changes can be made after they register. Thus, only schools who are traveling are encouraged to take advantage of this option.

Fourth, there will be a meeting on Saturday during the tournament for all WDCA and WHSFA coaches. It will be short, and a survey will be distributed on this season’s changes and we will discuss next year’s calendar of tournaments.

Thanks – and see you in South Milwaukee!

-Tim Dale Tournament Director

Qualifying for State ’09

Posted on December 6, 2009 – 7:18 pm by: Tim Scheffler

At the past two coach meetings the WDCA adopted a new procedure for qualifying for the WSDT aimed at leveling the playing field for four person teams, increasing the value and importance of WDCA sanctioned events, and encouraging local debate events. In the past a team needed to win or tie for first in a 4-person division or tournament with no break rounds or finish as a 1/4, semi, or finalist (depending on the number of entries and/or schools participating) in switch, LD or PF if those events held break rounds. This system let far fewer 4 person entries get bids and led to uncertainty about who had or had not qualified for the WSDT at many invites.

The new system promises to simplify things. To earn a bid to state a debater must get two legs. To earn a leg, a debater must be part of an entry (a four or two person team, PF team, or LD entry) that has a winning record (e.g. 4-2, 3-1) in preliminary rounds at a WDCA invitational, regardless of the number of entries, schools, or the format of the event. A single leg may be earned at local event (such as a conference tournament or an MDL tournament) but a second leg must also be earned at a WDCA invitational.

So, without further ado, we present the list of teams earning legs to the WSDT. (Click through to see the list).
