Friday, February 5, Rufus King held its tenth annual Congressional Debate at Milwaukee City Hall. For the second consecutive year, the top six students placing in the Senate advance to the University of Kentucky Tournament of Champions (TOC). Last year, Nicolet’s Gabriella Friedman and Jason Schwartz were the first Wisconsinites to compete in the TOC’s Congressional Debate division. This year, the bid attracted Ft. Dodge, Iowa’s Andrew Chou to join 12 Wisconsin schools and more than five dozen students in vying for the coveted top six spots. West Bend East won the Congress squad sweepstakes award for the best rank quality average for teams with at least eight Congress entries.
Saturday, February 6, Rufus King held its tenth annual invitational forensics tournament, the sixth held in partnership with Alverno College. Thirty six teams attended, constituting 436 entries. Brookfield East won the large school squad sweepstakes; Hartford Union won the medium squad sweepstakes, and The Prairie School won the small squad sweepstakes award. Tournament director Adam Jacobi piloted a new software suite for tournaments, Tabroom.com. While there were a few issues of adjusting to a software package written for a different state/region, overall it performed well, and the tournament was fortunate to have a number of experienced and calm tab coaches!

The James Madison Memorial Debate Team traveled to the Twin Cities this weekend to compete in the 24th Annual MinneApple Debate Tournament at Apple Valley High School. An octafinal-level qualifier for the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in both Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum Debate, the MinneApple is one of the most competitive invitationals in the nation.
More than 60 teams from as far away as Texas and California competed in the Varsity Public Forum division including many of the finest teams in the country. After six preliminary rounds, both entries from James Madison Memorial advanced to the elimination rounds—Lingran Kong and Valerie Shen as the 2nd seed with a 5-1 record and Michelle Yang and Yi Yi as the 20th seed with a 4-2 record. Both Kong (17th) and Shen (2nd) earned individual speaker awards—Valerie finished with 118.0 high-low points, an average of 29.5 points per round and in a virtual tie for 1st with the top speaker from Eagan High School in Minnesota.
Debating to earn a bid to the Tournament of Champions, both Spartan teams were victorious in the double-octafinals; Kong and Shen defeated Eastview (MN) while Michelle and Yi defeated Okoboji (IA). Their winning ways continued in the octafinals. This time, Kong and Shen defeated The Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies (Richmond, VA) while Michelle and Yi defeated The Montgomery Academy (AL).
The Spartans’ impressive run ended in the quarterfinals as both teams lost on split, 2-1 decisions: Lingran and Valerie to The Blake School (MN) and Michelle and Yi to Northland Christian (Houston, TX). Blake and Northland Christian went on to face one another in the finals.
James Madison Memorial’s showing was the most successful ever by a Wisconsin team in Public Forum Debate at a national invitational. Congratulations to Lingran, Valerie, Michelle, Yi, and coaches Tim Scheffler and Nick Bubb for an outstanding performance.
