JMM’s Valerie Shen Named Presidential Scholar

Posted on May 3, 2010 – 4:49 pm by: Tim Scheffler

Valerie Shen of James Madison Memorial was named one of two Wisconsin Presidential Scholars, an honor extended to 141 students nationwide. She shared her achievement with her debate coach, Tim Scheffler, who will receive a Teacher Recognition award. Valerie was a recipient of both a Wisconsin Debate Coaches Association and Wisconsin Forensic Coaches Association scholarship. She was the WFCA’s 2008-2009 State Champion in Extemp, and with partner Lingran Kong, the WDCA’s 2009-2010 State Champion in Public Forum Debate. She and Lingran advanced to elimination rounds at the NFL national tournament in Public Forum in 2008 and 2009, and are making a third trip there this year. The past weekend she and Lingran achieved a 4-3 record at the University of Kentucky’s Tournament of Champions, placing 26th overall. She is an NFL Academic All-American, holds a Premier Distinction Degree (five ruby), and is currently 23rd on the All-American list.

A review by WFD revealed 22 of the 141 Scholars are NFL members and 7 educators are current or former NFL coaches (Shen and Scheffler included). This recognition shows the value of Debate and Speech in brining out the best in students and the value that debate and speech coaches have on our nations brightest scholars.  (Full list after the break).

Post-Passage Health Care Reform Extemp Questions

Posted on March 25, 2010 – 3:52 pm by: Nick Bubb

With Obama’s signing of the Health Care Reform Bill and the Senate passing the Reconciliation Bill this afternoon (it still has to go back to the House for a second vote because the attached part about Pell Grants did not meet budget reconciliation rules), one of the season’s biggest/easiest to predict extempore topics of the season has moved into a different phase. So here are fifteen important post-passage Health Care Questions:

  1. Is the Health Care Law unconstitutional?
  2. Now that Health Care has passed, what should be the Republicans’ legislative strategy?
  3. How does the Health Care Law rank among prior legislative accomplishments?
  4. Can the Republicans recapture the House with a “Repeal the Bill” Campaign?
  5. Will the Health Care Law stimulate the American Economy?
  6. Will Health Care’s passage rejuvenate the democratic base?
  7. What consequences exist for the Democrats that voted against Health Care?
  8. In light of the Health Care Debate, has the catholic church strayed from its message of social justice?
  9. What role should public opinion have in shaping policy development?
  10. Now that Health Care has passed, can Congress address other domestic priorities?
  11. Is the Health Care Law a “Win” for President Obama?
  12. Has ideology replaced American pragmatism?
  13. How will the Health Care Law affect state government budgets?
  14. If Republicans had offered a viable alternative, could they have been successful in blocking Health Care?
  15. Do Republicans bear responsibility for threats of violence to Health Care supporters?
