For the last three years the Wisconsin Alumni Association has honored young University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni with its Forward Under Forty awards. The Forward Under Forty awards recognize UW grads under age 40 who are making an impact on the world by living the Wisconsin Idea.

Brian Riedl was awarded with one of the Forward Under Forty awards for 2010. Brian was honored for his work on the Federal Budget with the Heritage Foundation. A great description of his efforts is in the above link – so I won’t bother rehashing the Alumni Association’s excellent work.

I had a chance to talk to Brian’s speech and debate coach, Mike Traas, about his involvement with the Appleton East team. Traas said the following:

Brian was a part of that magical group that was successful at Kansas City, along with Ben Bayer, Erick Lichte, Dan Jessup, Ben Schurg, Nick Stumbris, Jack Champeau, Ann Hackel, Tara Hofkins. Erick Lichte finished 2nd in DI, Nick Stumbris 4th in House, Tara Hofkins Semi Finalist in Oratory, Jack Champeau Finalist – senate supersession, Dan Jessup & Ben Schurg both quarterfinalists in HI, Ann Hackel Quarterfinalist in DI, Ben Bayer – Foreign Extemp Quarterfinalist (missed Semis on the 3rd tiebreaker), Ben had the Black ribbon and was 3-3 in LD with cases he wrote on Sunday (he didn’t care about LD any more at that time), and Brian Reidl – the only one not to break, he missed the break on a tie breaker.

That year, Brian gave his economy speech and hand gun control speech so many times – you would think those were the only topics that he knew about, but he had a broad breath of knowledge. [Which is impressive because...] Brian only started forensics/debate during January of his senior year. Brian also really enjoyed Student Congress.

I felt that this was worthy of mention on WFD because Brian’s experiences directly relate to debate and public speaking. If you were not sold on the benefits of speech and debate to your professional career, Brian’s example should convince you of the activities benefits.

If your team has an exemplary alumni that Wisconsin Forensic Daily should feature, let us know!

As promised, here are the full list of questions from the Madison Memorial tournament this weekend.

Included is a list of “questionable questions.” Because Tim Scheffler and I have a good time writing these, we frequently come up with not quite real questions. We planned to leave these out for our extempore speakers – to freak them out (I don’t know anything about college basketball!). Someone informed them of our intentions – they were not phased.

Some of the “questionable questions” are decent (otherwise the joke would not have worked), so feel free to cherry pick those. The others, should just be ignored.

Having been proposed and discussed at several WFCA meetings, Wisconsin Forensics Daily would like to turn its attention to the Double Entry Proposal for the WFCA State Tournament. The current WFCA State Tournament only allows a student to enter into a single event. Schools are capped with a 25-person team and cannot enter more than four students in a single category. The proposal would keep both the 25-person and 4 entries per category caps, but would allow students to enter into more than one event.

A summary of the current proposal is below the break. Additional proposals are forth coming, and separate posts will be made as soon as they are available.

Double Enter plan
submitted by Lyn Luce, Waupaca

Rational:

Ripon has the extra rooms needed to cover the extra entries.

The number of entries has been down in the past few years, so this would help increase participation.

Double entering would increase the judge pool, which would be a great benefit to the tournament director.

The WFCA state has not been self supporting. Double entering would increase the revenue taken in for the WFCA state tournament making it more likely that the tournament would become self-supporting.

The students would have audiences as double enter students would be in two rooms as an audience member. Additionally the WFCA State tournament has many non-competing audience members (parents, friends, college students etc.) who make up audiences.

Double entering would enable more teams to have “full teams” of 25 entries which is at best an arbitrary number established long ago.

Double entering is educationally sound with research showing that it would benefit gifted and talented students.

Better competition adds to the competitive nature and credibility of the winners.

This is an option for coaches. A coach does not have to have the max in any category, the max number in a group event, (i.e. group interp) or have a student competing in every event. WFCA gives many options to coaches; this would be one more

89% of the teams at the WFCA state in ‘07 did not have a full team. 95% in ’08, approx 89% in ’09. During those same years all teams receiving a first place, in any division, had teams of 25 entries. Clearly there is an advantage for the minority of teams who have “full” teams.

There is an obvious advantage to schools where there is a larger general population of students to draw forensics team members from as the majority of the full teams are in division 1 and have been for almost a decade.

There has been a 10 fold increase in the number of activities which now take place during the forensics season. This makes recruiting harder.

The majority of the tournaments on the circuit offer double entering. Students and coaches are used to it.

There is a financial benefit to WFCA; If each of 65 schools only double entered 2 students there would be an increase of at least $650.00 for WFCA without incurring any additional costs. If ¼ of those entries were group events and additional $300.00 could be gained.

Drops in group events will not make teammates idle. There will still be an educational opportunity for them.

Group events will be more available to smaller teams, who now have all group members do individual events because the team “need the numbers.” This may help increase the entries and competition in duo which has never gone over 20 students since it was adopted. (It is our smallest event.)

New London, one of the largest tournaments in the state, uses multiple sites and has had double for years. That tournament runs on time and has great competition.

Double entering is not for every student. The decision to double enter should be made by the coach and the student, not coaches from other teams.

Decreasing budgets have caused teams to downsize. Transportation, over-night lodging, food, etc have increased costs. In an era of budget cuts, this allows a team to downsize yet remain viable and gain state recognition.

Administrators understands placing at state. This would help smaller teams gain that.

More options for coaches, more money and better competition for WFCA, more opportunities, more challenges and better education for students. A win-win scenario.

Plan:

No school would have to have students double entered. It is only an option available.

No double entering in Group discussion, Radio, or Extemp

No last minute adds per status quo.

No increases in the number of entries per team ( 25) or the max in each category (4)

Schools would have to identify double entered students. The tournament director would assign the codes of the double entered. For example, 34×1 (prose) is double entered and is also 34y1 in (play acting) Students and coaches would not be allowed to exchange codes.

This would only be for a 2 year trial-period

The tournament director would need additional help before the tournament either from the Congress coordinator or volunteer coaches. (Many have already volunteered to do this.) This would not incur additional paid positions.

An additional 15-20 minutes would be added the first year. To make sure that all judges know about the double entering. The need for the additional time would be reassed the second year. (There are only about 4 schools which the committee thought had not had experience with double entering) as suggested time table: 9:00, 10:30, 11:45 for prelim rounds, no changes for break rounds.

Ripon can supply vans and extra transportation. The time frame would allow students to be in two different events even if it involved the college and the high school campuses. Travel time between the two is only minutes.

The regional workshops could help inform coaches about double entering.

To cover the additional costs for transportation, each double entered student would be assessed a $5.00 transportation fee. Students/ coaches could transport the students themselves, but would still have to pay the $5.00 transportation fee.

Double entered students would not necessarily have to go first or last as the hour per round would allow extra time beyond the presentation time and movement times. Thus students could be an audience member in both events.

The feeling from the WFCA State tournament Director, Chris Zoch, and Site Coordinators Jodi Becker and Deano Pape was, ‘We can do this!”

When I first started coaching 13 years ago, students were never known by more than their codes at forensics tournaments. The awards announcer would proclaim, “and in first place, Solo Acting Serious, from Anyville school, 42R3!” In the meanwhile, awards ceremonies have become a classier affair, with standing ovations for the first place champion, and standards for tact enumerated in the WFCA Code of Conduct.

In the early part of the new millennium, I experimented at some tournaments with running PowerPoint presentations during awards, sliding names and schools behind the contestants. I was actually inspired by the spectacle that is the NFL National Tournament Awards program, and wanted to bring some of that celebration of students to our local competitions. In order to make this work, we needed to collect students’ names during the finals (power) rounds. The second set of typing in PowerPoint added a few extra minutes of waiting before awards, and whomever would operate the PowerPoint slides might advance a name a few seconds too early, ruining the suspense of announcement. So, the practice was dropped in favor of more efficient, shorter awards ceremonies — about the same time the “One-Clap” method of recognizing finalists took wing.

By then, however, the practice of collecting names and announcing them during the awards ceremonies became a norm, and a form was even added to the WFCA Handbook, tournament forms section to facilitate collection of this information. As Mike Traas began more freely distributing his amazing Microsoft Access file for tabulating tournaments, that feature was built-in to allow reading of names and inclusion of them in the results packets — and subsequent posting online here at Wisconsin Forensics Daily. When I piloted TabRoom.com at the Alverno tournament this year, I was pleased to see that it preserved ink/toner for the reading script generated, only showing students’ names — with phonetic key based on pronunciation guides coaches typed during online registration — and schools. The only exception was Group Interp. and Play Acting script pages printed by title (so I’ll have to ask the developer of that software if he can incorporate an option for names instead).

So, with all this technology and desire for fast and efficient awards assemblies, why do we perpetuate the practice of gratuitously reading codes during awards ceremonies? The tournament is over; let’s celebrate the students and the schools they hail from, not the temporary system used to mask their identities up to that point!

Respectfully,
Adam Jacobi
Former Coach, Rufus King HS & Director, Alverno College Tournament

For the second consecutive year, the top six students placing in the Senate advance to the University of Kentucky Tournament of Champions (TOC). Last year, Nicolet’s Gabriella Friedman and Jason Schwartz were the first Wisconsinites to compete in the TOC’s Congressional Debate division. This year, the bid attracted Ft. Dodge, Iowa’s Andrew Chou to join 12 Wisconsin schools and more than five dozen students in vying for the coveted top six spots. West Bend East won the Congress squad sweepstakes award for the best rank quality average for teams with at least eight Congress entries.

Saturday, February 6, Rufus King held its tenth annual invitational forensics tournament, the sixth held in partnership with Alverno College. Thirty six teams attended, constituting 436 entries. Brookfield East won the large school squad sweepstakes; Hartford Union won the medium squad sweepstakes, and The Prairie School won the small squad sweepstakes award. Tournament director Adam Jacobi piloted a new software suite for tournaments, Tabroom.com. While there were a few issues of adjusting to a software package written for a different state/region, overall it performed well, and the tournament was fortunate to have a number of experienced and calm tab coaches!
