Marquette Wins Maine East

Posted on February 23, 2009 – 10:11 am by: Nick Bubb

Many Wisconsin teams made the treck down to Chicago’s suburbs this weekend to compete in the Maine East Regatta. After Preliminary rounds, Marquette’s Joe Balistreri and Michael Hoffmann advanced to elimination rounds as the top seed. Also clearing from Wisconsin were: SPASH’s Cleo Johnson and Ian Miller and Marquette’s Ben Benson and Noah Charles. Both of those teams lost in the octofinals. Marquette BH endured through to the final round.

In the final round, Marquette debated Highland Park who read their Cellulosic Ethanol affirmative. It  claimed oil, warming, and food prices advantages. Marquette negated with a 1NC strateg that included the following arguments: a theory argument that the affirmative must defend the “whole rez”, a free market (don’t pick a winner) counterplan, a coercion disadvantage, and a synoptic dillusion argument that posits the government is not truly capable of “knowing” the economy.

Marquette went for the Free Market CP and Synoptic Delusion K. The decision was a 3-0 for the Negative to award Joe Balistreri and Michael Hoffmann the championship. Congratulations to those two and to their coach, Bill Batterman. With this win, Marquette BH is now fully qualified for the National Tournament of Champions in Kentucky.
